some men spend their lives chasing the accolades of pride—

who. Asami Sato ([personal profile] chittybang) and Mako ([personal profile] spats)
summary. University AU. Mako and Asami fall in love because of reasons.

There were perks to being the daughter of a wealthy and innovative entrepreneur, but Asami never wanted a guaranteed entry into the college of her choice to be one of them. She worked hard in high school in order to get into an institute of higher education based on her merits. Granted, she was provided with a tutor whenever she needed one, and she tended to be a favorite student among teachers. She had enrolled in an elite private school because she could afford it. Money was a gift she would inevitably have to acknowledge, but relying on it was something different, and that was a behavior she saw all the time among her peers.

When it came down to it, she almost didn't get into the school of her choice, the University of Republic City, based on the latest scandal concerning Hiroshi Sato. Future Industries was currently tainted with the reputation of selling arms on the black market to foreign countries. With Hiroshi participating in trials that even the best lawyers would have a difficult time defending, the future for the Sato family was looking bleak. Asami intended to carry the company on her shoulders after Hiroshi's retirement, but the moment would have to come sooner, and handing the business over to an inexperienced college freshman was like nailing the coffin for Future Industries.

There were no encouraging words to fall on when Asami started. She made it through her four semesters of school without contacting her father once. Currently Future Industries was in the hands of a more established adult, a business partner whose involvement in the illegal arms dealing had been speculated but without proper evidence was acquitted. His handling of the finances was lackluster, and his PR even more so, but all he had to do was keep the company alive until Asami could properly come in and take over. She even considered taking over before graduating; she was going to be twenty-one soon, which meant she was nearly three years past the legal age of running the corporation.

In the meantime, she busied herself with earning her Business degree. Stress relief came in the form of URC's Women's Ultimate Frisbee team, where she'd met her best friend and roommate Korra. Her trust fund enabled the two to live in a spacious off-campus apartment with two bedrooms, a shared bathroom, a kitchen/dining room and a living room. Her friends stemmed from the Ultimate teams as well as her major, and other than that she tended to keep to herself. Focusing on school was important now more than ever. Dating and parties happened from time to time, but Asami had built an unattainable reputation for herself, an unintended consequence of her stress but also for the better. Good behavior made her uninteresting to the press.

Entering into her third year, pouring rain throughout the first week of classes was a sad sign but not the worst as long as she was properly equipped. Asami stood out like a starburst among the plethora of black and grey peacoats in her candy-red slicker. She was pressed against her car beneath her black-and-white polka dotted umbrella, jiggling the driver's side door handle while traffic drove by. Her keys were locked inside, her spare was at the apartment, and none of the doors would open.

With a final, aimless hit on the car door, she resigned to the sidewalk and pulled out her phone to text Korra. It was perfect that she locked herself out of the car on the day she bought her textbooks, and the weight of them pulled on her shoulders from inside her black designer book bag.
